Walking Woman - Incident Room
Paula Bowley, Tegan Smith, Krys Verrall - WalkWorks

Artists’ Statement

Three women, architect Bowley, installation and video artist Smith, cultural theorist Verrall are Walk Works. For over a year the Project has produced visual material, written and reflected on the ordinary, often mundane experience of moving through public spaces. The interdisciplinary team - architect, artist, theorist - work important intersections between practices and knowledge (thinking?) about movement, power and accessibility.

In the Red Head Gallery Showcase, Incident Room attempts a reconstruction of “what happened?” after the fact. Installation and video artist, Smith, has become a ritual walker. In small notebooks similar to those used by police investigators she records and surveys her progress. These notes also make a journal. Bottom pages show daily records of routes and times spent walking. Top pages include a hodgepodge of incidents and encounters, lists of errands or rubbings of coins picked up on route. In the Incident Room we find evidence, documentation and the beginnings of invention. It is from these jumbled fragments that the story of “what happened?” begins to form.
